Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: Not well explained. Hypothesis by WP. 2, 591 (after Meillet) : prop. "fasten with a pin", of animals, to hinder their freedom of movement, from *κῶλος `wooden pin' (: Lith. kuõlas `pole') with ending after λύω; doubtful. By others (Meillet MSL 16, 244, Fraenkel Mél. Bq 1, 357) connected with κολούω `mutilate'.
